RARE OWL DRUG  COMPANY GASOLINE CLEAR GLASS BOTTLE 7.75"

Here is a rare example of an Owl Drug Company clear glass bottle, 7.75 inches tall, in which gasoline was sold. It is blown in mold with an applied lip. The automatic bottle machine was invented in 1914, and was adopted rapidly. This likely means Owl Drug was selling gasoline prior to 1914 in glass bottles. This is the only bottle, with a gasoline label that I have seen. It sounds crazy in this society that gasoline would sit in glass bottles on a pharmacy shelf, but remember--cocaine and laudanum also were sold freely in similar containers at the turn of the twentieth century. Gasoline was a new product at this time in history. It was relatively expensive, and the gas pumps also had glass tops. Label is mostly intact. Condition of the glass is attic mint. This bottle was discovered in the attic of an old farmhouse. Embossing is very strong. No photographs have been doctored. None of my bottles have been tumbled as tumbling Irreversibly modifies the character of the glass. I never call a bottle "perfect", because there's a handcrafted aspect to bottles blown in a mold and tooled by hand.
